Stray Cat’s Instinct Leads Her To A Furmom To Help Her Give Birth

Stray cat knew where to go when she was ready to give birth to her litter— the lady who owns her friend and has been feeding her!
Salami the stray cat got pregnant before Ida Floreak would have the chance to spay and vaccinate her but still cared for her and her babies when they came.
The furmom, who has not experienced watching and assisting in a cat birth, helps deliver a stray cat’s babies and has even found forever homes for them.

What started out in the early fall of last year as a simple liking to and hanging out with Ida Floreak’s cat in her backyard stoop, turned out to be a blessing for a stray cat named Salami.Ida Floreak, a painter in New Orleans recalls that Salami just came and really liked her cat. “They’d sniff around each other and she was more interested in him than he was in her. It was definitely clear that she was here to see him — which was sweet.”

Even if Salami was skittish around Ida, she showed up every morning and ate whatever food that Floreak left for her. Ida was planning that when Salami would be comfortable with her, she would have Salami fixed and vaccinated. But Salami showed up with a growing belly even before that happened.

The pregnant Salami would stay with Ida to be pet and brushed. Until it was time for her to deliver her babies in April.

“She came by at 5 and was squeaking very insistently in a way that seemed out of character,” ida said. “So I let her in and she started to have her babies around 8 or 9 in the morning.”

This was a surprise for Ida since she was not expecting Salami to give birth already.

The first two babies came out quickly. She thought that Salami only had two kittens only to find out that Salami still had two more kittens later that night.

Ida recalls that she was nervous because she has not seen or done anything like this before. “But to watch her, it was clear she just knew exactly what to do. It was a really intense experience.”

The two-month quarantine has given Ida time to focus on the thriving family and has found forever homes for the 4 kittens.

Her other cat may not be used to the kittens and misses having the house to himself but he and Salami get on well. Salami’s instincts not only led her to a safe haven for her and her kittens but also to her forever home.
